Six years after Covid crushed its Australian debut, the hit Broadway musical Waitress is finally ready to serve a slice of joy in Sydney. The long-awaited production will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March 2026, marking a sweet comeback for a show that has won hearts across the globe.
Based on the 2007 film of the same name, Waitress follows Jenna Hunterson, a small-town pie maker stuck in an unhappy marriage, who dreams of a better life. With original songs by Grammy-winning artist Sara Bareilles, the musical has become beloved for its mix of humor, heartbreak, and irresistible tunes like She Used to Be Mine.
Originally slated for an Australian tour in 2020, the production was cancelled as Covid-19 shut down theatres worldwide. Now, with a new creative team and local cast, producers say the Sydney revival will feel “freshly baked” while honoring the charm that made Waitress a Broadway favorite.
“After everything the theatre world has been through, Waitress feels more relevant than ever,” says producer Michael Cassel. “It’s a story about hope, resilience, and starting over — themes Australians deeply understand.”
Tickets for Waitress go on sale later this month, with previews beginning in late February. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Jenna’s world, this heartfelt musical promises to be a deliciously uplifting night at the theatre.
