70s comedy legend Brian Murphy left huge sum to family after Man About the House star’s death aged 92

His £617,000 fortune will be left in trust for his wife Linda
ACTOR Brian Murphy, famous for his roles in Man About The House and its spin-off George and Mildred, left a £617,000 fortune following his death earlier this year aged 92.

The star, who was a fan favourite on Last Of The Summer Wine, passed away in February at his home in Bromley, in south east London.

Following his death his wife Linda Regan, 75 – who played April in Hi-de-Hi! – paid tribute to her husband.

The heartbroken wife said: “My love for you will never die. RIP sweetheart. Brian who I will love forever.”

When interviewed in 2016, Brian said: “I can’t grumble about my lot because I’m very happy.

“I’ve brought up a family and been working relatively solidly for 60 years. It has been a lot of fun.”

The actor had two sons with first wife Carol Gibson, and married Linda in 1995.

His will states that his £617,000 fortune should be left in trust for Linda, and his sons Trevor and Kevin.

Brian’s most famous role was as George Roper in the ITV sitcom Man About The House, which ran from 1973 to 1978.

Fans loved his portrayal of the sex-shy, downtrodden landlord with the dodgy comb-over in the 70s comedy.

Murphy was reportedly contacted by men seeking advice for sex problems who asked him how to avoid their bedroom duties after his time on the show.

Later, in the follow-on series George and Mildred, Murphy appeared alongside Yootha Joyce from 1976 to 1979.

In 2003, he joined Last Of The Summer Wine, and for seven years played Nora Batty’s neighbour, practical joker Alvin Smedley.

He also appeared as Clive in the TV comedy Benidorm.

Before becoming a star of the silver screen, Murphy almost gave up acting to become an insurance salesman.

But instead he embarked on a long and acclaimed career in TV acting, landing roles in major productions and becoming a household name.

Remarkably, he worked almost until his last day – taking up roles in some of TV’s best-loved sitcoms across his distinguished career.

In the lead up to his sad passing he featured in episodes of the BBC’s Holby City, The Catherine Tate Show and ITV sitcom Benidorm.

Brian Trevor John Murphy was born on September 25, 1932, in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, the third son of grocer’s assistant Gerald Murphy and wife Mabel who later ran a restaurant on the island.

Brian’s brothers, Ken and Eric, died on active service in World War Two and tragically his mother suffered a breakdown after Eric’s death.

He is survived by his wife and his two sons from his first marriage who are all set to receive a share of his fortune as per his will.
