Thomas has appealed to his daughter to ‘see him one more time before I die’
MEGHAN Markle has sent a written letter to her estranged dad Thomas after he had his leg amputated during life-saving surgery.
The olive branch letter was delivered into Thomas’ hands by “reliable and trusted contacts” but the Duchess of Sussex – who has not spoken to her father since 2018 – will not fly out to visit him in hospital herself.
Thomas Markle, 81, underwent life-saving treatment after his left leg was amputated below the knee.
He was rushed to hospital in the Philippines on Tuesday, December 2, after falling ill at home, with doctors later warning his condition was critical.
It is believed Thomas is being treated at University of Cebu Medical Centre, after he was pictured wearing a hospital gown with its initials on.
The Sun previously revealed Meg had been ringing round hospitals in the country in an attempt to contact her dad.
Now, it is understood Meghan has sent written communication to him, but she is not expected to fly out to see him.
Thomas denied claims Meghan had messaged him and appealed to his daughter to “see him one more time before I die”.
Meg’s half-siblings Thomas Jr, 59, and Samantha, 61, also pleaded with her to reach out.
We revealed Meg sent her estranged father an email following his health scare, but the email address reportedly hadn’t been active for five years.
However, sources claim it appeared to have been delivered and did not bounce back.
Thomas has since been removed from the intensive care unit and is now recovering in a regular hospital room, the Mail reports.
It is understood he underwent surgery last Wednesday, before being transferred to the intensive care unit.
Doctors then prepared the ex-Emmy-winning director of photography for another operation to amputate his leg in order to remove a blood clot.
Thomas Jr described how his father’s foot had “turned black” before his leg was amputated.
He told the MailOnline: “There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death.
“My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly.
“I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated.”
Meghan’s spokesperson confirmed the former Suits star had reached out to her father following his “life or death” surgery.
It remains unclear if they have actually spoken and it is believed she has tried to reach out to her dad in the past.
Speaking on his father’s health battle, Thomas Jr revealed that his dad now faces paying a massive medical bill for his life-saving treatment.
He added that his father’s life “was in imminent danger” and described an urgent ambulance transfer to a larger hospital.
The Duchess of Sussex, who emailed her father on Friday, has picked up the phone trying to trace her dad, sources close to her say.
Sources close to the Sussexes also claim the couple understand Thomas does not have his telephone in his possession at hospital.
It is also claimed that Meghan, who has not spoken to her dad since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, does not even have his number.
The Duchess of Sussex has personally called several hospitals to try and locate her father without luck, it is said.
Thomas’ other daughter Samantha, 61, previously said: “He is a strong man, but he has been through so much.
“I am praying that he is strong enough to survive this.”
Thomas has suffered with ill health, including a stroke, in recent years and had been living in Mexico for the past 10 years.
The 81-year-old then relocated to the Philippines in January.
He has been estranged from Meghan since her wedding to Prince Harry.
Thomas suffered two heart attacks on the eve of the big day in 2018 and was unable to walk his daughter down the aisle.
He has never met his grandchildren Archie and Lillibet and did not walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.
Meghan cut him off after he put the phone down during a heated row with Harry while recovering in hospital.
A spokesperson for the Duchess said: “With the support of reliable and trusted contacts, her correspondence is now safely in his hands.”
