The Irish Sun can reveal the ‘person of interest’ in the murdered boy’s case has been linked to a money laundering case.

She’s suspected of receiving over €7,000 into her bank account from a phishing scam.

The incident is believed to have happened in June 2022 but was only reported to Gardai last September by an online banking company.

The woman – the only person to be questioned over Daniel’s murder – is also suspected of acting as a ‘money mule’ for a man living in the Tallaght area.

Gardai suspect the man has links to the notorious ‘Black Axe’ cyber gang who specialise in online frauds.

One source said: “The woman is suspected of involvement in a fraud which saw a lot of cash go into her account.

“The suspicion is that she was recruited so that money from a phishing scam could be lodged in her account.

“The incident happened three years ago but is still under investigation.”

Following the woman’s arrest for Daniel’s murder on Monday, she was later released without charge on Tuesday.

A file will now be completed for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

We called to her home on Tuesday but she was not present.

NEW GUIDELINES

Her arrest for Daniel’s murder also comes after Tusla confirmed this month new guidelines would be introduced to identify children who have gone missing.

And extended relatives of Daniel also continue to work closely with Gardai on the investigation.

The investigation into his disappearance was launched on August 29 after concerns were raised by officials from the Department of Social Protection.

Gardai received information that the child had died after an accident and was secretly buried at a field in Donabate.

REMAINS FOUND

His skeletal remains were later found in September after a 16-day search.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of the murder of tragic child before being released without charge.

The woman – who is known to the child – was released around 7am on Tuesday after being quizzed by detectives.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday morning at her apartment in north Dublin.

She had her period of detention extended twice while in Garda custody at Swords Garda station.

The first extension was for a period of six hours, then for a final 12 hours.

PAINSTAKING SEARCH

The woman was quizzed overnight about Daniel’s disappearance and murder.

The arrest – the first in the harrowing case – came after cops made the dramatic move to upgrade the inquiry to murder after the skeletal remains of the youngster were formally identified.

Partial human skeletal remains were found after a painstaking search of an area of scrubland close to his home in Donabate, north Co Dublin, in September.

Forensics experts spent months carefully identifying the child’s remains after they were exhumed and removed from marshy ground.

In a major update at the start of the month, cops revealed long-awaited DNA analysis had confirmed the remains were Daniel’s.

Gardai then moved to launch a homicide probe in a bid to solve the riddle of exactly what happened to the child – who would have turned eight this month.

He was last seen alive four years ago.
