First picture of ‘well-respected’ businessman, 60s, killed in Donegal stabbing as murder probe launched amid tributes

‘It’s hard to believe that something like this could happen to such a lovely guy.’
A MURDER probe is underway after a prominent Co Donegal businessman was killed in a horrific stabbing.
Stephen McCahill – a former winner of the Donegal person of the year – lost his life after he was attacked at a property outside Ardara, shortly before 4am this morning.

It’s understood his attacker drove to the property on a quad bike.
One man, who’s known to the victim and aged in his 30s, was later arrested by gardai at another property.
Detectives are now trying to establish a motive for the killing.
He’s now being held on suspicion of murder and can be held for 24 hours before being released or charged.
It is understood Mr McCahill, aged in his mid-60s, suffered fatal stab injuries, but a post-mortem examination is still yet to be carried out.
Mr McCahill, who is an auctioneer and also runs a pub, is well known across Co Donegal for his work in the local community and because of his involvement in the GAA.
Locals have been left shocked at the murder.
One told us: “It’s hard to believe that something like this could happen to such a lovely guy.
“Stephen is well-respected in this community and people are devastated at such a terrible loss.
“Everyone’s thoughts are with his family and friends at such a terrible time.”
Local Sinn Fein councillor Brian Carr told the Irish Independent: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.
“Gardai are investigating and we need to respect the process and the family’s privacy.”
