Illegal migrants awaiting deportation get free MATHS TUTORS & better GP access than Brits as Labour vows asylum blitz

The Home Office and the NHS are also hiring a £139,000-a-year lead doctor and a £134,000-a-year deputy to treat detainees across two sites
ILLEGAL migrants awaiting deportation are given private maths tutors.

A Sun investigation uncovered a raft of removal centre perks, along with dedicated on-call GPs.

It came as Labour announced £3,000-plus payments for ex-asylum seekers to go home, as part of changes to the “out of control” system.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the country had become more “divided”.

Our probe reveals those held in immigration detention centres are provided with maths tutors, exercise classes and private GPs.

And £1.5million a week is spent on moving detainees around the country between centres and to deportation flights using specialist escorts from Border Force.

‘High-quality’ service

Migrants are held in the centres while awaiting deportation, or while their immigration status is being determined.

In some cases, foreign prison inmates are transferred to the immigration removal centres ready to be returned to their home countries after serving part of their sentences.

Border Force has forked out £54.482million for the first eight months of this year escorting detainees to IRCs and airports.

Contractors are used to escort those who have no lawful basis to remain and are in the process of being deported.

So far this year, June and July have been the most costly months with the transport bill topping £14.479million — or £237,540 every day.

The bulk of the cash goes to private firms Mitie Care and Custody Limited and Bloom Procurement Services.

More than 35,000 failed asylum seekers, foreign criminals and other immigration offenders have been sent back to their home countries since July 2024.

Details of the costs for “in country escort” have been published in Home Office data showing how it spends tax cash.

Meanwhile, the Home Office and the NHS are hiring a £139,000-a-year lead doctor and a £134,000-a-year deputy to treat detainees across two sites near Heathrow.

It means there will be at least two on-call doctors to provide a “high-quality” service for 820 migrants.

But there is only one GP for every 2,250 public patients at surgeries across England.

At Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre in Co Durham, women waiting to be deported are given free maths tutoring and access to exercise classes.

Art and IT lessons are provided by the contractor Serco in addition to access to a gym.

Officials say the programme aims to stop Channel migrants from attempting to re-enter the UK by giving them skills and opportunities to rebuild their lives in their home countries.

ILLEGALS’ ‘GOLDEN GOODBYE’ IS UPPED FROM £3K

ENTIRE migrant families will be deported under a borders crackdown — but taxpayers face forking out more than the current £3,000 each to get illegal to leave voluntarily.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood yesterday vowed to end the “perverse incentive” of parents packing kids on to small boats to bolster their chances of staying in Britain.

Meanwhile the Home Office will trial beefing up “golden goodbye” payments in hope it will cut the number of expensive legal battles.

The biggest asylum overhaul since the Second World War comes after more than 400,000 migrants have claimed asylum in the past four years.

Some 106,000 of them currently getting taxpayer-funded support.

Figures also show more than half of refugees are on benefits eight years after arriving.

And around 700 Albanian families are thought to have remained in Britain despite seeing claims thrown out.

Yesterday Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood hit back at criticism from left-wing Labour backbenchers, insisting: “To the British public who foot the bill, the system feels out of control and unfair.

‘A more divided place’

“It feels that way because it is. The pace and scale of change has destabilized communities.

“It is making our country a more divided place.”

She said her curbs simply match the “scale of the challenge we face”.

As well as flak from her own MPs, the Home Secretary was attacked by the Tories for ruling out quitting the European Court of Human Rights — and for upping the £3,000 payments.

Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp accused her of “spraying around taxpayers’ money as cash handouts for illegal immigrants and foreign criminals”.

He added: “It is madness that we have a legal system that protects illegal immigrants and foreign criminals so much we have to pay them to leave.”

Other measures include upping the time a refugee must wait to get permanent residency from five years to 20 years. And if their home country is declared safe in that time, they must return.

Ms Mahmood also confirmed The Sun’s revelation that migrants with valuable assets such as jewellery and cars will have them seized and sold to pay for the costs of their accommodation.

This is having a significant impact on our ability to enforce the Immigration Rules and control migrationOfficials

And she pledged to simplify the current appeals maze to stop cases dragging on for years.

She spoke after 30 migrants staying at Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, were snapped enjoying an afternoon kickabout in a nearby park.

Under the shake-up, Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights will be tightened to curb last-minute “family life” arguments foiling deportations.

Documents show that between January and September 2022, 86 per cent of people lined up for removal who lodged Article 8 “rights-based” claims were then released.

Officials warned: “This is having a significant impact on our ability to enforce the Immigration Rules and control migration”.

Ms Mahmood will also move against Article 3 of the ECHR, which sets the bar for returns to countries deemed unsafe.

But ministers admitted the UK cannot change the Article alone, and will instead seek international cooperation.

The automatic duty to house asylum seekers will also be torn up, with the Home Office saying the current system hands out “generous terms” that taxpayers can simply no longer afford.

A new “Reduced Right to Public Funds” will be introduced to tighten access to welfare, with a full consultation on benefits restrictions planned for 2026.

Countries who have refused to take back their illegal migrants will face travel bans, with Angola, Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo first in her sights.

At the same time, instead of chancing dangerous crossings, a capped number of legitimate migrants will be allowed to join relatives or come to work or study through easier routes.

Last night Labour MP Stella Creasy branded the package “performative cruelty”.

Colleague Brian Leishman said there was “a real degree of disgust at some of these proposals” — and said that, in parts, the plan sounded “very Reform in their nature”.

Fellow rebel MP Nadia Whittome branded the changes “shameful” and accused ministers of “throwing vulnerable people under the bus to appease the far right”.

But in the forward to Labour’s Asylum Policy Statement, PM Sir Keir Starmer wrote: “There is nothing compassionate about allowing the vile trade in people-smuggling that perpetuates illegal migration to persist. The case for reform is then devastatingly simple.”

He added the current situation placed a “severe strain on both our asylum system and our wider social contract”.

A Home Office spokesman said it did not directly fund the GP roles.

Practice Plus Group, the agency behind the roles, said it had an obligation to provide one GP per immigration removal site every day.
