Jessie Buckley claims she suffered ‘unfair objectification’ during her time on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s talent show

Jessie Buckley has claimed that she suffered “unfair objectification” during her time on a BBC talent show.

The Hamnet actress rose to stardom when she was 17, when she became a finalist on the Andrew Lloyd Webber talent show, I’d Do Anything.

The series gave aspiring actresses a chance to audition for the role of Nancy in the West End production of Oliver.

As she continues to gain critical acclaim for her role in Hamnet, Jessie has now opened up about the origins of her career.

Speaking to Vogue, the 36-year-old detailed that it was a “moment of discovery” for her.

“I was 17. I was in a moment of discovery. As women, it’s such unfair objectification … Back then, I was just trying to move into a space of myself,” she explained.

“I really hope that a 15, 17, whatever-age woman never has to be brutalised quite like what happened on that show. But I didn’t recognise it fully at the time. I just felt it, which was difficult,” she continued.

“It’s bonkers, in hindsight. I was just like: ‘Oh my God. I get to peek behind this curtain already. I get to sing. I get to be part of this industry that I really was hoping I could be part of,’” Jessie reflected.

“I look back at it and I feel like: ‘God, you’re so brave.’ I don’t know if I’d have that courage now. And I don’t know if that was kind of innocence or ignorance,” she detailed.

The former Oscar nominee went on to note that she was struggling with her mental health at the time of the show.

“[I] was not well fully. I was depressed and I – just wasn’t well. There was a lot that was really messed up,” she confessed.

Jessie also revealed that she suffered from “a lot of body shaming”, adding: “And bringing me to femininity school. And I was growing into my body.”

Jessie finished I’d Do Anything in second place, and she was offered the chance to be winner Jodie Prenger’s understudy in Oliver.

However, the Irish star confessed that she turned the job down by walking into the office of theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh.

Jessie explained: “I walked to his office, rang the bell and said: ‘Is Cameron Mackintosh here? Thank you, but I won’t be taking that job.’”
