Heartache as woman dies in horrific single-vehicle crash on busy Limerick road & gardai launch probe amid scene exam

It comes after an infant boy died following a two-car crash in Co Louth over the weekend
A WOMAN, aged in her 70s, has died in a horrific single-vehicle crash in Co Limerick.

The crash took place on the Abington Road in the Murroe area of Limerick at around 4:10pm on Wednesday.

The driver of the only car involved in the collision, a woman aged in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

Her body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

No other injuries were reported to gardai following the collision.

The Abington Road is currently closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Local diversions are in place but drivers have been urged to plan their routes accordingly and avoid the area.

In a statement this morning, gardai urged anyone who may have information about the collision to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 3:50pm and 4:20pm, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bruff Garda Station on 061 382940, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Separately, an infant boy has died after a two-car crash in Co Louth over the weekend.

The tot was left with critical injuries after the crash on Saturday, but has since passed away.

Gardai said the young boy died at Children’s Hospital Ireland on Dublin’s Temple Street.

The female driver, 20s, of the first car, which the infant boy was a passenger of, was removed from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda with non-life-threatening injuries.

From the second vehicle involved in the crash, the driver, a man in his 50s, and a teen girl passenger were also removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardai yesterday urged anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R132 in the Dowdallshill area between 7:50pm and 8:20pm are asked to make it available to investigating Gardai.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
